CLEAN WATER FOR SEPIK RIVER FOLKS WITH HPS430C

Our HPS430C (a manual hand-pump ultra-filtration and carbon cartridge system) was tested recently to convert Sepik River water into clean, potable drinking water using filters and membrane during a recent visit by the Kalibobo Spirit.

The man behind this was Melanesian Tourism Services managing director and Chairman of Melanesian Foundation, Sir Peter Barter, pictured right, displaying the purifying equipment to Kamindimbit villigers. He said the filters would suit the village's needs and were simple to maintain. Community statesman Benjamin Wally and all children, for the first time, carried a bottle of purified water prompting him to plead to Sir Peter to leave the machine in the village.

He backed up claim of technology to turn raw sewage into drinking water by drinking some of it in front of a touring group of city leaders and business owners.

Pure Sense have been using our MBR (membrane bioreactors) and an example is treating of livestock wastewater (see industrial application).

Converting Sepik and Ramu into clear, safe drinking water!
Sir Peter Barter, the former Regional Member of Madang and Minister for Health made a visit to the Sepik and Ramu River with Richard Brown from Ecolab, a company specialising in water filtration in Australia.   Mr Brown demonstrated a small filter, with a hand pump could quickly convert dirty water into clean potable drinking water in minutes using a unique filter that can extract bacteria and sediments down to point one micro to producing good quality drinking water.  Sir Peter said he was very impressed as the system as it is inexpensive and uses appropriate technology for rural areas, there is no complicated machinery and the only maintenance required is back flushing of the filter and ultimately changing the filter.  The small filter used is adequate to produce sufficient water for a large family, or even an Aid Post but larger filtration machines are available to suit villages and hospitals.
Mr Brown has undertaken to investigate how such low cost filtration plants could be marketed in PNG and affordable costs to people who draw their drinking water from rivers, creeks that have high sediment and bacteria levels.
The pictures show Richard Brown filtering water at Kwanga along the Middle Ramu River and the water being tested by eager villagers that were excited by the system being demonstrated.
